Bestsellers: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) ReviewThis book is below the standard of many other volumes in the VSI series, and also a bit shorter (116 pages of text). Early on there's an interesting compare and contrast of the US and UK "bestseller" markets. After some discussion of what is a bestseller, and the history of lists, the bulk of the book is a kind of gossipy recitation or series of capsule descriptions of the main bestselling novels in the US (Chap. 4) and the UK (Chap. 5) during the 20th Century. The focus throughout is on the content and genres of these books. There is a short Chap. 6, about 4 pp., about digitization and e-books.
Notwithstanding that this is a VSI and therefore of necessity concise, there are many unfortunate shortcomings of the approach taken here:
(i) no discussion of other countries' bestsellers, or even of the influence of Anglophone books on the bestseller lists in other EU countries, to say nothing of Japan, Latin America, etc.;
(ii) next to no discussion of the business aspects of bestsellerdom, including, among other topics: agents and advances, the relationship of bestsellers to the backlist, and media tie-ins and merchandising; and
(iii) no discussion of non-fiction. This last is puzzling: since the thesis of the book is that one can learn something about the preoccupations of an era by looking at its bestseling novels, one might think its best-selling non-fiction would be at least as transparent a gauge of the Zeitgeist. And some lines on the history of the self-help and business book genres, for example, would also have been reasonable to include in a book so titled.
All in all, this book might be of most interest to someone looking for a chatty bit of "cultural studies" fluff as a kind of sorbet course between more substantial books. If you're expecting a book about the publishing business, or even a more serious cultural analysis, you will probably be disappointed.Bestsellers: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) OverviewLady Chatterley's Lover. The Blue Lagoon. Portnoy's Complaint. The Da Vinci Code. For the last century, the tastes and preferences of the common reader have been reflected in the American and British bestseller lists, and this Very Short Introduction takes an engaging look through the lists to reveal what we have been reading--and why. John Sutherland shows that bestseller lists monitor one of the strongest pulses in modern literature and are therefore worthy of serious study. Exploring the relationship between bestsellers and the fashions, ideologies, and cultural concerns of the day, the book includes short case-studies and lively summaries of bestsellers through the years: from In His Steps--now almost totally forgotten, but the biggest all-time bestseller between 1895 and 1945--to Gone with the Wind, The Andromeda Strain, and The Da Vinci Code. Discussing both classic and contemporary novels, alongside some surprising titles and long-forgotten names. Sutherland lifts the lid on the bestseller industry, revealing what makes a book into a bestseller and what separates bestsellers from canonical fiction.

Woody Allen and Philosophy: You Mean My Whole Fallacy Is Wrong ReviewReally heavy philosophical stuff. If you're an avid fan [like me] of Woody Allen and understand philosophy a little [like me] you will enjoy this book. I found out more than I thought I would ever know about Allen's films from reading this book. Thoroughly engrossing and fun to read.Woody Allen and Philosophy: You Mean My Whole Fallacy Is Wrong OverviewComedian, writer, director, actor, musician, and deep thinker, Woody Allen is clearly trying to say something, but what? And why should anyone care? Fifteen philosophers representing different schools of thought answer these questions, focusing on different works and varied aspects of Allen's multifaceted output. These essays explore such topics as how Schopenhauer's theory of humor emerges in Annie Hall; why, for all his apparent pessimism, Allen gives a brighter alternative to the Bogartian nihilism of film noir; the importance of integrity for the Good Life, as found in Manhattan; and the fact that just because the universe is meaningless and life is pointless is no reason to commit suicide. Also here are droll, probing essays on why hedonism is a health hazard, and why, despite the fact that Earth may be swallowed by a black hole and crushed to the size of a peanut, the toilet continues to overflow.

Vampire Knits: Projects to Keep You Knitting from Twilight to Dawn ReviewI can't tell you how much I love this book. I've loved vampires since watching Dark Shadows when I was growing up, all the way through Lestat and now Twilight. So, this book was a must for me. I knew that I'd love it because it had to do with two of my favorite things, vampires and knitting, but I didn't expect it to be as nice as it is. And not just the photography - beautiful photography is common in knitting books. Where this book stands out is this - the patterns are all on pages that are kind of yellowed and old looking with a gothic font, there are little "tid-bites" of vampire information on just about every page, there are two vampire quizzes, and there is even a page of tips on getting blood out of our knitting! That sounds kind of funny, but it's really very practical! Each chapter has kind of a theme and there is a little paragraph at the beginning of each one. The author's writing is really good - informative and yet with a sense of humor. I thought I knew quite a bit about vampires, but I learned a lot from this book that I didn't know.
As for the patterns, they are really nice. They are mostly accessories, which are my favorite thing to knit anyway. There are socks, scarves, capes, bags, hats, etc. A lot of them have kind of a gothic feel to them, but not so much that anyone couldn't wear most of them. There are a few with vampire sayings on them, but if you wanted to make them without the sayings or change them, that would be easy to do.
I wouldn't think twice about buying this book. I buy knitting books all the time and this is one of the most unique books I have and I highly recommend it.Vampire Knits: Projects to Keep You Knitting from Twilight to Dawn OverviewSurrender to the allure of knits inspired by the immortals we all love to fear. If you adore Twilight, True Blood, or The Vampire Diaries, this collection of 28 imaginative and beautiful projects is sure to captivate. • Black capes are so 1897, instead get stylish with the dead sexy Sidhe Shrug. • Unleash your inner shapeshifter with the Werewolf Hat. • Keep warm while holding hands with your vampire by wearing these Bellisima Mittens. • Around humans? Use the Blood Bottle Cozies to disguise your beverage. Whether you are wandering the Carpathian Mountains or the bayous of Louisiana, these smoldering projects—for knitters of all levels—will keep you well protected, no matter what you attract.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Coloring Book ReviewCompared to most modern coloring books, this one is fabulous. The people look like who they are supposed to be. The paper is not good for markers or pencils, its definitely a crayon book. If you have a box of 120 crayons, you can really get creative with clothing and backgrounds (bluebell and tumbleweed are excellent for both). Lots of fun. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Poster Book ReviewThe second Harry Potter poster book brings you huge, glossy photos from the "Chamber of Secrets" film. There are posters of your favorite Harry Potter characters (castmembers dressed up in costume) and great film scenes. You can cut them out of the poster book if you'd like and hang them up but they are just as fun to look at by flipping through the book. The photos are not the same ones that you keep on seeing on every single Harry Potter site--a lot of them are rare ones that can only be found in this poster book. If you're a huge Harry Potter fan and can't wait for the "Chamber of Secrets" film to open, then this poster book is a must.
I highly recommend the "Chamber of Secrets" poster book.

Hogwarts Through The Years Poster Book (Harry Potter Movie V) Review"Hogwarts Through the Years" is a nice keepsake for any die-hard fan of the Harry Potter films. It features photos from all five movies to date. There are pictures of the Hogwarts staff and students of the various Houses, not just Gryffindor.
The book has a glossy hardcover, which gives it a nice appearance. But I can only give this book four stars because some of the photos included are just horrible. Instead of high-quality images, some of the photos of students are nothing but cropped, low-res screen caps from the movies. They're blurry and look bad juxtaposed with the higher-quality images.
It looks like Scholastic threw this book together in a hurry to coincide with the box-office release of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". But since the price is low, and it's a hardcover book, it's not that bad of a deal. Especially if you love the films.Hogwarts Through The Years Poster Book (Harry Potter Movie V) OverviewIt's the must-have Harry Potter keepsake! The official Hogwarts Yearbook is stuffed with pictures, quotes, stats, and facts about all your favorite Hogwarts students - from Year One through Year Five. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Poster Book ReviewI like this poster book, but you'll be disappointed if you're looking for pictures of the adult characters. As of August 25, 2007, the book description in the Editorial Reviews erroneously lists posters for Dumbledore, Sirius Black, Bellatrix Lestrange and Lord Voldermort. The fact is that the only adult character included in this book is Tonks (and Mad-Eye, but that's because he's standing next to Tonks).
There are not many pictures taken from the movie either. Also, I could tell that two posters were from the Goblet of Fire. Still, there are some nice portraits and group pictures. I especially like the shots of the Weasley siblings together.
This book makes an acceptable sort of movie keepsake. However, I often wonder why five movies later none of the Harry Potter films has companion books such as those published for "The Lord of the Rings." I think it's time somebody works on a serious the-making-of type of book that will satisfy movie lovers. The Harry Potter films deserve a more in-depth, behind-the-scenes look than kids' movie poster books can ever offer.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Poster Book OverviewThirty full-size portraits of the actors we've come to love, featuring Daniel Radcliffe [Harry], Rupert Grint [Ron], and Emma Watson [Hermoine]. Also includes Sirius Black, Professor Dumbledore, the Weasley twins, Cho Chang, Neville Longbottom, Ginny Weasley, Draco Malfoy, Bellatrix Lestrange, and Lord Voldemort.

Hogwarts Through The Years Poster Book Updated (Harry Potter Movie 6) Review"Harry Potter Through the Years Poster Book" is laid out a lot like a student yearbook, except each of the main characters has pages devoted exclusively to him/her, showing them in scenes from the first movie to the sixth. Also included are photos of the castle and grounds, the professors, the Death Eaters, the Order of the Phoenix, the Ministry of Magic and the magical creatures. There is not much in the way of text, except to label the people or scenes.
These are not photos that can be ripped out. Again, think yearbook. They are full color pages of scenes out of the movie on thick, matte paper. In fact, it is so yearbook that one photo of Parvati Patil looked like a zoomed in shot of her in a low resolution group picture. The photo was grainy and a little out of focus. Of all the scenes she`s in, I wonder why they couldn't come up with a nicer shot of her to print. Fortunately, that was the only photo I noticed like that.
This is a great book to peruse through and any Harry Potter fan (my son included) would enjoy flipping through and reminiscing. If you are looking for a Harry Potter yearbook, this is a nice one to have.
Hogwarts Through The Years Poster Book Updated (Harry Potter Movie 6) OverviewFollow Harry, Ron, and Hermione through six years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – from their first days at school to the Triwizard Tournament, the D.A., the Slug Club, and much more. Includes over ninety pages of exclusive photos. It's the must-have Harry keepsake.

An Unofficial Muggle's Guide to the Wizarding World: Exploring the Harry Potter Universe ReviewJ.K. Rowling has crafted a world that on the printed page, and with two books in her planned series still remaining, is nearly 2700 pages long. The first three films in the series clock in at nearly 455 minutes total. That is a heck of a lot of material to digest, let alone remember.
Fortunately, not even the wizard physicians at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries could have come up with a better remedy than that of first time author, Fionna Boyle. Like a spell cast to pack a wizard's suitcase, A Muggle's Guide to the Wizarding World manages to cram just about everything you need to know about the world and experiences of Harry Potter into an extremely enjoyable (approximate) 450 pages. Amazingly, she does so without spoiling anything for those readers who may not have finished reading all of Rowling's work, while at the same time offering just enough information to make this guide an exciting read in its own right, and a useful resource for those of us who have read and re-read the books more times than we can count.
She begins with brief biographical information on Rowling and the story behind the story of Harry Potter's beginnings - a tale almost magical in itself.
Part One of the book is a discussion of the various characters in Harry's world, from his close friends Ron and Hermione and their families, to more recent characters, such as Luna Lovegood and even the miscellaneous witches and wizards that have appeared in the books that you may have forgotten.
Part Two looks at Hogwarts, which Boyle covers so thoroughly, it seems as if she had filched the Marauder's Map herself. We learn about the four houses, classes students take, the castle, and of course, Quidditch.
Part Three opens our eyes to the wizarding world. Places that have been explored in the novels and films such as Hogsmeade and Knockturn Alley are included, as are the Ministry of Magic, wizarding gizmos and gadgets, and many more interesting parts of this mysterious realm.
Part Four is perhaps the most useful inclusion for the common muggle, as it features lists of differences between the books and films, offers advice on a wizarding tour of Britain, gives parents a few hints on staging their child's next Potter-themed party, and a great deal more.
Overall, this book is an outstanding way to pass the time until the next Potter book or movie is there for fans to devour. Reading A Muggle's Guide to the Wizarding World, I immediately wanted to pick up Rowling's earlier books again, as Boyle's text is so rich with details and enthusiasm for Harry Potter, that it's impossible to resist.
A Muggle's Guide to the Wizarding World is an invaluable resource for Harry Potter fans. Absolutely recommended! An Unofficial Muggle's Guide to the Wizarding World: Exploring the Harry Potter Universe OverviewThis book has not been authorized by J.K. Rowling, Warner Bros., or anyone associated with the Harry Potter books or movies. From Azkaban to zombies, every aspect of the enthralling universe in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series is explained, expanded, and celebrated in this literary guidebook for Muggles (humans who are often not aware of the magical world that witches and wizards inhabit). Characters, creatures, locations, and objects in the series are explored, including the magicians' school Hogwarts, the sport of Quidditch, and the practitioners of the dark arts. Enthusiasts of the series will find supplementary information on the historical roots of the symbolism and mythology used in the series, how the books and movies compare, and creative ideas for throwing a Harry Potter–themed party.

Reading Harry Potter Again: New Critical Essays ReviewI came across this book in the fall of 2009 as a recommendation from a professor when a fellow student and I were researching for a Harry Potter course to be taught to college sophomores the following semester. The project fell through, however the reading was still informative and fun for me as a fan.
This book, a sequel to "Reading Harry Potter," provides several follow-ups to the essays presented in the first book. A few essays of particular note to me were "Potterverse and the Pulpits Beyond Apologia and Banning," "Happily Ever After: Harry Potter and the Quest for the Domestic," and "Doubling Transfiguring, and Haunting: The Art of Adapting Harry Potter for Film."
The first essay I listed explores how preachers are using Harry Potter to teach Christian lessons during church. One particular preacher noted that he asked those who had yet to finish "Deathly Hallows" to leave the room if they did not want to be spoiled about the ending. It was touching and pleasurable to read about a relationship between religion and Rowling's work that wasn't antagonistic.
"Happily Ever After" follows "Cinderfella" from the first book in which the authors look at gender issues and "masculine" and "feminine" choices. This time the writers focus on Nymphadora Tonks, Dolores Umbridge, and Bellatrix Lestrange. The piece is insightful, and the authors did well in choosing three side characters rather than focusing on characters like Hermione, Ginny, and Luna.
"Doubling, Transfiguring, and Haunting" focuses on the adaptation of "Prisoner of Azakaban" to film. This was my least favorite of the movies, and yet this essay made me like it a little more. The writer notes the nuances and subtleties in the film and how it relates to the readings.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this book to someone looking to delve a little deeper into Rowling's world. During my research, I came across collections of essays that were poorly written and even more poorly fact-checked (Hermione being a half-witch, James and Voldemort being the same age to name a few), but this was perfectly edited, and its essays a joy to read. While one may want to read "Reading Harry Potter" first, this book will stand on its own with its insightful commentary.Reading Harry Potter Again: New Critical Essays Overview
As was argued in Reading Harry Potter: Critical Essays (Praeger, 2003), interpreting the underlying messages and themes of the Harry Potter series is vital for understanding the ways in which we perceive and interact with each other in contemporary society. The novels and corresponding film adaptations have broken records with their astonishing sales and widespread acclaim. They have also generated a plethora of writing-by critics, academics, and fans. J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books could easily be called this generation's most formative narratives, and thus certainly warrant critical attention.

This new volume of essays covers the entire seven-book sequence. Contributors consider myriad themes from a variety of perspectives. Areas addressed include religion, morality, race, magic, and other themes popular in discussing the books. With this book in hand, fans of the series-indeed anyone interested in the Harry Potter phenomenon-will better appreciate and understand Rowling's work and the impact of her stories on our culture and on our times.
