Illuminating Torchwood: Essays on Narrative, Character and Sexuality in the BBC Series (Critical Explorations in Science Fiction and Fantasy) ReviewAs a fan of the series and having studied (and work in) the media - I found this book offered a well balanced critique on Torchwood. This is a collection of essays that are entertaining in their own right - but as a collection, they provide a wealth of material for debate and enables you to revisit the episodes with a fresh perspective.
Illuminating Torchwood: Essays on Narrative, Character and Sexuality in the BBC Series (Critical Explorations in Science Fiction and Fantasy) OverviewCreated in 2006 as a spinoff of Doctor Who, the internationally popular BBC television series Torchwood is a unique blend of science fiction and fantasy, with much more of an adult flavor than its progenitor. The series' "omnisexual" protagonist, maverick 51st-century time agent Captain Jack Harkness, leads a team of operatives from the present-day Torchwood Institute, a secret organization dedicated to battling supernatural and extraterrestrial criminals. With its archetypal characters, adult language, subversive humor and openly homosexual and bisexual storylines, Torchwood provides a wealth of material for scholarly analysis and debate. Using Torchwood as its focal point, this timely collection of essays by a range of experts and enthusiasts provides an interpretive framework for understanding the continually developing forms and genres of contemporary television drama.

Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies ReviewHere's a real treat for fans of science fiction movies. Gary Gerani's TOP 100 SCI-FI MOVIES is an entertaining, insightful and well-illustrated guide to great science fiction films of the past 80 years. To paraphrase director John Carpenter, who wrote the Introduction to Gerani's book, "For movie addicts, it doesn't get much better than this." Here, here.
In reverse order, Gerani counts down "cinema's most significant science fiction endeavors." Number 100 is EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS. You'll have to read the book to find out #1! Each film gets at least a full-page spread. Many get two pages; a very few get four. After listing 'Who Made It' production details, Gerani gives a 'What It's About' plot summary followed by a lengthy 'Why It's Important' discussion on the film and its impact. Likewise, each film is illustrated by at least one or more photographs and/or movie poster artwork. Some titles rate more illustrations. THEM, for example, has the original color movie poster and eight b&w production stills. 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA features a color poster and nine color stills.
Paging through TOP 100 SCI-FI MOVIES is akin to taking a walk down memory lane. The films covered include INVADERS FROM MARS, BACK TO THE FUTURE, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, MATRIX, GODZILLA, STAR TREK II, VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED, WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, ON THE BEACH, ALIENS, FORBIDDEN PLANET, THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, METROPOLIS, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, FANTASTIC VOYAGE, FIRST MEN IN THE MOON, THE FLY, ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS, DARK STAR, THE CONQUEST OF SPACE and many others. Gerani's affectionate yet critical commentary makes for entertaining reading.
In short, Science Fiction Film buffs should pick up a copy of Gerani's book. It's a fun, thought-provoking guided tour through many fondly-remembered cinematic treats. Highly recommended.Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies OverviewFantastic Press strikes again with its second trade paperback offering, this time exploring the ultra-fanciful universe of spaceships, exotic planets, time travel, and extraterrestrials. The "Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies" are reviewed and ranked by fantasy screenwriter/film historian Gary Gerani, who covers everything from early silent groundbreakers like A Trip to the Moon to today's widescreen, computer-generated blockbusters. With over 600 rare visuals, full-color layouts. and an introduction by one of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers, this exciting new pictorial overview is the ideal companion book to 2010's Top 100 Horror Movies.

Book 1, Gamadin: Word of Honor ReviewWhen our book club first received Book 1, Gamadin: Word of Honor to review, many of us thought this would be another UFO story or off-world space tale, especially after reading the first chapter, which put us on the distant planet of Amerloi.
But we realized that this was no ordinary adventure when we were transported to a very earthly Newport Beach, California! There we meet a couple of surfers, Harlowe Pylott and Matt Riverstone, taking on the waves of a closed beach. They come across a boating accident. Saving its passengers leads Harlowe to his half-alien, soon-to-be significant other, Leucadia Mars. He finds out that having a girlfriend like "Lu" has its consequences, like a promise that could cost all of them their lives. In no time, a series of events leads the boys in search of the galaxy's most powerful weapon: Millawanda, an ancient Gamadin spaceship.
Discovering new words like "robobs," "Dakadudes" and "undog" is only part of the charm of Word of Honor. The fast pace, strategy and battle sequences, and inter-relationships of the characters are well put together. "Flashback" passages are cleverly woven in throughout, providing clarity to the story and in many places, setting the stage for events to come.
The two surfers are fresh, likable, irreverent, good-yet-"bad boys" that you would want to go out with on a date, or just hang out with. They are cool, funny and forthright - definitely hero material. Who would have guessed that two ordinary sixteen-year old boys would lead the resurrection of a once mighty, galactic police force?
We especially enjoyed the portrayal of the two female lead characters, Leucadia and her mother, Sook, who are intelligent, independent and strong - very good role models for our younger female readers. You will find the common thread of love, loyalty and a sense of purpose over self woven throughout the story, as the young characters begin their epic inter-galactic adventure. Even the junior characters of the story have their own special appeal, and a few of them even have the potential to steal the show.
As a club, we found Word of Honor a heartwarming surprise of Southern California lifestyle humor and plot twists, full of imagination. You will find yourself drawn into the Gamadin saga with Book One. It is, we have found, quite a ride!! You don't have to be a sci-fi aficionado to enjoy this adventure. The story and characters are engaging enough to capture both the young adult and the young-at-heart audience. All of us felt the same sense of regret once the story ended, and we look forward with enthusiasm to Book Two!!
Book 1, Gamadin: Word of Honor OverviewSixteen-year old Harlowe Pylott and Matt Riverstone are body surfing the gnarliest waves of the new century when their fun is interrupted by a yacht capsizing off the Newport coast. After rescuing the famous movie star Simon Bolt and the half-alien socialite Leucadia Mars from certain death, Fate sends them on the greatest ride of their lives. Robobs and the undog are only the beginning! Dakadude killers have swooped down from the heavens looking for the galaxy's most powerful weapon: an ancient Gamadin spaceship named Millawanda. If the Daks cannot capture Millawanda, they will kill her while she is still weak and unprotected . . . along with the Earth and anyone else who gets in their way. If you think finding an ancient spaceship in the middle of the desert is cool, wait till you get a load of what Harlowe and his friends dig up . . . And it still works!!!

Dark & Day ReviewDark & Day is a special mix of Harry Potter & Star Wars with unique characters with enough charm and creativity to stand on its own! It focuses on one boy, Jonothon Wyer, and his quiet life in the small town Polari (which is under perpetual Twilight). The story soon takes you on an adventure across the lush and rusty world of Dark & Day.
As you follow Jono on his adventure, it really feels like there lots of history and stories within the every new town and each, interesting new person he meets. You could say that the world is just divided into a Day side and a Night side, but every place is so rich and creatively created that the world is a character on its own.
I won't spoil the plot, but there is a lot there, with some great twists and character developement.
Great read for kids and adults, alike.
Can't wait for book #2!Dark & Day OverviewJourney to a world torn between Dark & Day.Earth is torn into the clashing Ends of Dark & Day. The star system is flush with mythic creatures, epic mysteries and thrilling adventures! When a sickly boy discovers a relic of an ancient era, he is swept from his quiet town into the center of a prophecy that threatens to tear the world apart! Jonothon Wyer must learn to outwit dangerous foes, trust uncertain allies, tame new powers and rise to be the hero he dreams of being!

PORTAL: Portal Chronicles Book One ReviewPORTAL is a sci-fi romance with well-fleshed characters and an intriguing plot. Normally, a novel in the romance genre would be of no interest to me at all (being a guy and all!) but PORTAL managed to keep my interest throughout thanks to its main character, Arizona, and its fascinating sci-fi plot involving time travel and alternative dimensions. There's such a careful balance of sci-fi versus romance that both genre readers will enjoy it equally. I'd be hard pushed to say which genre comes through the strongest, and in this regard it reminds me slightly of The Time Traveler's Wife, another story that's hard to pigeonhole and one that wouldn't work if either the sci-fi or the romance was taken away.
There's a lot to think about after the book ends. All the complexities of the "experiment" are finally laid out for the readers (and poor Arizona) to see, and yet you come away with your head spinning -- in a good way. The best kinds of movies and novels are those that leave you with something to ponder, and PORTAL certainly does that. And the fact that there's a forthcoming sequel, EQUILIBRIUM, due in Summer 2010, is something of a no-brainer -- there's plenty more story waiting to be explored yet!
Not wanting to give away spoilers, I was happy with Arizona's decision at the end and think it would have been unrealistic for her to choose otherwise. Still, part of me wanted her to "take the plunge" and choose the other option, because what a great story that would make! Maybe that's what we have to look forward to in EQUILIBRIUM... or maybe the author will take us in a new direction altogether. There are so many possibilities, especially after the Epilogue, which almost came out of left field and really throws a sinister spanner in the works. Roll on Book II!PORTAL: Portal Chronicles Book One OverviewCome Find Me Two Years Ago...

The Book of Were-Wolves ReviewThis was a strange and fascinating book. In collecting varied myths and stories pertaining to werewolves, the author created a very interesting and absorbing read. There were some editing errors in this version, but they were not terribly serious. The different anecdotes ranged a spectrum from the horrific to the almost comical. It was unlike anything I have ever read before and I think it is a great starting point in looking at the history of the werewolf myth. The Book of Were-Wolves OverviewThe Book of Were-Wolves, being an account of a terrible superstitionWritten in 1865 but still holding up to the test of time this book ranks as a classic of European lore on lycanthropy/shapeshifting in particular pertaining to werewolves. Worth its weight in gold just for the two chapters on Scandinavian wolf lore, and the idea that the viking berserkers were werewolves/shapeshifters. But besides that there is plenty of folklore on werewolves/shapeshifting in Eastern Europe, France, and various other places in Europe. Also historical documentation of medieval serial killers who were alleged to be werewolves is recounted, as well as Baring-Goulds own encounters with local werewolf legends that had people in fear to go in the woods alone in various locales in France that he visited.

The Reaper ReviewDuring the years I've known Jamie, he has been hard at work on this novel, writing, re-writing, honing it, and getting it perfect. Though I have not yet had a moment to read the finished novel, I had the privilege of reading many of the preliminary drafts, which even in their raw state showcased Jamie's gripping writing style and fantastic character development. Hard to put down, and highly recommended! The Reaper OverviewTobias Peters was human until the day he died, trying to save his best friend. ANIMAIA ReviewI could compare this book to having a similar feel to either the Harry Potter or Percy Jackson books, but I believe this book is more enjoyable for me as it has an inspiring message with it in regards to ecology and animal rights.
By the end of the book, I found myself wanting to re-read the story and also anticipating the followup book.ANIMAIA OverviewANIMAIA - (Book 1). In the alternative, exotic country of ANIMAIA, Arno Steele and his animal-talking school friends battle to save their animal-friendly world from those determined to destroy it. Jungles, beaches, wild animals, dinosaurs, and a very mysterious school with equally odd teachers come together in this young adult fantasy of 101,000 words. Mild sci-fi and paranormal elements, some challenging themes. Suitable for 12 years to adult. Book one in a series, but the story is complete and stands alone.Arno Steele can talk to animals - and he's very, very good - as his dad discovers when Arno is four. A young Arno is infatuated with the legend of the Truemore, an historical saviour who will one day return to protect his mystical and animal-friendly world, Animaia (anim-eye-a), from destruction. The modern country of Animaia arose from The Great Animal War of Liberation over 100 years ago and remains under constant threat of returning to the “old ways." An elite few have inherited an ancient ability to talk to animals telepathically and they are called “Anima." The Anima are trained as the protectors and administrators of human-animal integration in the society. At thirteen, Arno is to be packed off to an elite school for young Anima. As events unfold, a reluctant Arno is perceived by some as the new saviour. Too bad: Arno would rather stay at home and hang out at the beach with his school friends, Leroy, Ashley and Charlotte, and his lifelong buddy Arkie the crow. What's a boy with such exceptional ability and a possible foretold destiny to do?But now dark forces are gathering once more, and they are organised like never before under the influence of a leader who believes it is his divine destiny to destroy the free-living Animaian state and create a realm of unbridled exploitation and destruction. Animaia fears "the return of the fleshers."Arno is under personal threat, and he and his friends find themselves at the centre of this threatening storm at their Anima school, wondering if they can unleash the mystical Truemore -- the human form of the spirit of life itself -- to help in the battle for their homeland, or if the Truemore is nothing more than legend and folk lore.Ultimately, Arno must face the leader of these destructive forces when a school camp in the jungle goes wrong and he finds himself fighting for his life.ANIMAIA -- not quite Harry Potter in the Jungle.

The Elf (The War of Brothers) ReviewI loved the fact that it's not very long and I am not a huge fan of Sci-fi books and I loooooooved it. Actually I'm not an often book reader, but this cought me in a sec.The Elf (The War of Brothers) OverviewCassadonia, the place where Elves live, is the reverse of Earth; whenever a tree grows in the upper World, another one grows back in Cassadonia. And conversely, whenever a tree is cut down in Cassadonia, it also falls down in the human world. With the help of Gretheld, a funny troll, half-Gnome, half-beast, Andrew Fox is about to begin a journey that will take you from London to Cassadonia, and back to London, bringing Elves to our time and humans to the old days across the Mirror of Arritz, an ancient piece of art built by Kobold, a Dark Elf and the greatest mirror-maker ever. Since the very first human creation, Elves have been secretly guarding our world and protecting mankind. However, there are some Elves who hate humans and wish to recover what once belonged to the Elf race just before man appeared on Earth. The story is full of horrific creatures that will scare Andy to death, such as Cattivi “The Clown", who feeds himself on Elves' corpses and princess Loggry, a cannibal Fairy: among Trolls, Ogres, (sigue pero es largo, son todo monstruos inventados), who are humans that have been turned into elves. Here is where the mess actually begins. About 70,000 years ago, when God created mankind, the Elf race had to abandon the Earth and had to exile to Cassadonia, adapting to a whole new universe of rules in order to survive, thus here is where the mess actually begins...

Hollow Fields Vol. 1 ReviewLucy is on her way to a new boarding school - unfortunately, she takes a short cut through the woods and ends up at the suspicious Hollow Fields. Blinded by a luxurious room and the promise of free tuition, she signs a contract to become a student there - without bothering to read it first. If she had, she might have realized that there was something very wrong with Hollow Fields...
The set up is a little unbelievable - who sends their nine year old daughter to find her way to a school she'd never been too, with no supervision or directions? What nine year old runs into the woods in the middle of a storm without getting directions first? But once the story gets passed that, it is charmingly creepy and entertaining. Lucy reacts in a believable manner for a nine year old - acting with out thinking, blurting things out, fainting during her Animal Transplanting class (or what ever it is called when you sew two different animals together to make a new one). She is appropriately horrified by the class matter of Hollow Fields - Grave Robbing, Constructing Killer Robots, etc. - but smart enough not to make a big deal about her mistakenly coming to Hollow Fields. When finishing this volume, I was intrigued and wanted to read more about the mystery of Hollow Fields and see how Lucy would escape - or not!
In addition to an engaging plot, the artwork was fantastic. The quality seemed pretty good, but it was the designs that really impressed me. Hollow Fields and the Engineers were very creatively and creepily rendered and the students were a contrast with their 9 year old cuteness. I like art in manga well enough, but it is rare that I slow down my reading to appreciate the art. This was one of this series that made me look twice.
I've read hundreds of manga and it is rare that a first volume to have impressed me this much. So if you want to read something a little different, with a likable main character and excellent art design, I recommend giving Hollow Fields a try.Hollow Fields Vol. 1 OverviewForgetting your homework was never this dangerous!Little Lucy Snow was meant to be enjoying her first day at the nice elementary school in town; however a macabre twist of fate sees her enrolled instead at Miss Weaver's Academy for the Scientifically Gifted and Ethically Unfettered--also known as Hollow Fields.Located on the outskirts of Nullsville and run by the insidious Engineers, the grim boarding school dedicates itself to raising the next generation of mad scientists and evil geniuses! Classes include Live Taxidermy, Cross-Species Body-Part Transplantation and Killer Robot Construction, and for her own survival Lucy has to master them quickly...the student with the lowest grades at the end of each school week is sent to the windmill for detention--and so far, no child has ever returned!Japanese Foreign Ministry's "International Manga Award" Runner-Up Winner!~NEW REVISED EBOOK EDITION: Feb 27, 2011~

Darien Connors and the Necromancy of Eridu ReviewDarien Connors and the Necromancy of Eridu is the first novelette in the Darien Connors series. It follows the exploits of the teenager Darien who discovers that not only does he have magical powers but he's an alien who is an integral part in deciding an ancient war.
The story opens with Darien dealing with the loss of his astronaut father and not knowing anything about his true heritage. After being forced to use magic to protect himself from some bullies, he is discovered by the Eriduian Warrior, Arylos, who whisks him back to Eridu to become trained in Kishpu (magic).
As a major Harry Potter fan, I've become a sucker for anything magical. While this story is just starting out, it kept my interest throughout with interesting characters and surprising twists.
I was feeling kind of empty without Harry. Darien Connors fills a bit of that emptiness with an exciting narrative that has familiar themes but an original and thrilling story line.
They'll be times when the story feels "Potter-ish" in that there are certain similarities between the characters and the worlds. The author even admits as much in his letter to "the fans of the other boy wizard" at the beginning of the book.
Still, I don't write this one off as just another poorly done Potter rip-off. It has enough original feel to stand on its own, not to mention the alien and interstellar aspects. Space battles and that kind of thing - which I've never really been into reading but is so well done it flows well with the rest of the story.
My only complaint is the the length - which is about 20,000 words. That's what you get with a novelette, I suppose, but the author promises to have the next installment ready in a mere few months.
I can tell you I'm looking forward to that release.Darien Connors and the Necromancy of Eridu OverviewThe epic tale of Darien Connors opens as the youngster discovers that everything he thought he knew about his life and his family is completely false. Darien is plunged into the middle of a war between aliens factions, discovers powers he never he knew he possessed and learns of his destiny as a Necromancer.

Witch on the Water (Rowan of the Wood) ReviewWitch on the Water is the sequel to the novel, Rowan of the Woods. The novel follows the continuing adventures of Cullen, Maddy, and April. All in all, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this novel and its predecessor. Witch on the Water is action packed and filled with some very suspenseful moments. This is a book that I think readers of all ages could enjoy.
One aspect that I really enjoyed was that the characters came into their own in this book. While they did grow a lot in the first novel, I was able to see a lot more of their potential. Sadly, the plot still leaves me wondering a few details, but I am hopeful that these will be addressed in the third novel. Take a rainy afternoon and try out this series, I do not think you will be disappointed.Witch on the Water (Rowan of the Wood) OverviewWitch on the Water, book two in the Rowan of the Wood series, chronicles the continuing adventures of twelve-year-old Cullen and his friends, Maddy and April. Cullen thought he had enough trouble surviving school, dealing with his miserable home life, and being possessed by Rowan, a 1400-year-old wizard. But when Rowan's wife, the sadistic vampire Fiana, comes back seeking revenge, Cullen and his band of misfits must do what they can to stop her. This time Cullen's favorite teacher is Fiana's first target. Imaginative and poignant, the adventure of Rowan and Cullen thoroughly enchants the reader and is a great series for readers of fantasy, young and old.

Alex Detail's Revolution ReviewThis is a serious and smart adventure that delivers the goods -- a riveting sci-fi plot -- along with a lively cast of characters who exude a warmth and quirkiness that is all-too rare in the genre.
Without giving away spoilers, I'd say I was impressed by how the author balanced the deeper philosophical questions with a story that didn't slow down.
And although it's set in space and dishes all the geektastic goods you could want (aliens! space/time quandaries! computers!) it is, at its heart, a Hollywood thriller in the best sense. Chock full of cliff hangers and big personalities, this book won't leave non-nerds feeling lost in space, making it accessible and enjoyable for all.
I'm hooked -- would love to know the next move for humanity and the Harvesters -- so I hope there's a sequel.Alex Detail's Revolution Overview17 year old Alex Detail has been kidnapped and sent off to fight in a hopeless war against The Harvesters, an alien force that is trying to extinguish Earth's Sun.Unfortunately for Alex's kidnappers (and the world) he has lost the mega IQ that allowed him to win the last war with The Harvesters ten years ago when he was just 7 years old.But now the House of Nations is out of options. The end of life is imminent.Alex must save his ship, fight his evil clone and survive the war long enough to make it to Pluto, where, underneath the planets frozen surface lies the only force in the solar system that can stop The Harvesters."With Alex Detail, Darren Campo has created the rare hero that stands alongside Luke Skywalker and Spiderman as a timeless everyman hero that crosses all generations. So buy this book and hold on."- Tom DeSanto, Writer/Producer X-Men, Transformers"Alex Detail's Revolution is an outstanding book - compelling, thought-provoking, and fun all at the same time. In some ways Darren Campo has created a mythical, fanciful alternate-reality counterpart of Beyond Cosmic Dice."- Jeff Schweitzer, former White House Science Advisor, Author of Beyond Cosmic Dice and Vote to Save the Planet."Alex Detail's Revolution starts out as if Douglas Adams had decided to write Ender's Game. But what develops isn't cosmic lark as much as a riveting thriller that delves into examinations of time, space and, interestingly, the human capacity for faith - or the lack thereof."- Ken Wheaton, Advertising Age, author or First Annual Grand Prairie Rabbit Festival

Hollow Fields Vol. 2 ReviewThis continuation of the first manga takes place two months later. We learn more about each character and how they are developing. It moves at a nice pace and raises the stakes considerably with even more charm than the first.
Although Lucy is working hard at her studies, she still ignored by her classmates and she is lonely. Some projects are going her way, but some still blow up in her face. Will she be able to stay out of the windmill after tough midterm exams?
There are also flashbacks to the beginning of Hollow Fields and we get to see some of the engineers before they became stitched up and steam driven. Many more secrets of the school are revealed, some held by teachers and some held by students.
Oveall, I loved both the art and the story and I can't wait for the next installment!Hollow Fields Vol. 2 OverviewAs the dark secrets of Ms. Weaver's past become clear, it's up to Lucy to rally her fellow students into action against the Engineers' evil machinations. Sapphiry Rose and the Journey to the Inner Core ReviewI thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Sapphiry Rose is a delightful and intriguing story of the life changing experiences of a young girl who lives in one world but belongs in another. The author's detailed description of Sapphiry's life as she knows it, her realization of her true identity and where she belongs gives the reader a vivid picture of the differences between the world she knows and her adjustment to the world of the inner core. A fascinating story that is hard to put down.Sapphiry Rose and the Journey to the Inner Core Overview

Evie's First Magic Lesson ReviewEvie's First Magic Lesson is a charming soon to be classic of magic and suspense. It shows the day-to-day life of a once village girl who learns she is a souray. Souray is a term used. Ray is another term. Normal people are ray while special people are souray. These special people can use magic. This is an enhancing book that really brings the characters to life. Once I started I couldn't stop. Great read for an early teen like me.Evie's First Magic Lesson Overview"Evie's First Magic Lesson" is a middle-grade novel set in an entirely imaginary world. It follows the adventures of Evie and Bridget as they discover that everyone has talents, if they would only learn to use them. From the Back of the book: Things used to be different. People, known as ray, from each of the five major groups worked together. The souray were able to manipulate the physical world, known commonly as "using magic." The emeray were great scientists and teachers. The vedaray could see a person's heart. The aniray could communicate with animals. And the physiray had physical abilities beyond imagination. Even with all these differences, it was a time of progress and cooperation. But it didn't last. The current king is a souray. He believes that anyone who cannot use magic should be separated and uneducated. The years have erased memories and planted permanent ideas of inherent inequality. The time for change has come again. In a small village, distanced from all of these politics, a young girl holds a secret that could help return this world to the way it once was. She has the ability to remove the king from power and he has only just discovered she exists...

The Hunger Games ReviewWow. I was barely able to put this book down for a second after the first few pages got me completely hooked. Suzanne Collins narrative here has an immediacy to it that, when combined with the very dramatic life-or-death plot, is incredibly compelling. It's entertaining, and incredibly disturbing all at once. If this was merely a good read, I would have given it 4 stars, but they say great art leaves you changed after you experience it... and this book definitely did that. Suzanne Collins has, with one amazing work, propelled herself onto my top shelf.
Parents, caveat emptor! The storyline is brutal. Even though the writing is geared for young adults, the main characters are teenagers, there's very little physical romance, and the actual violence would probably count as PG-13 nowadays... it's probably one of the most terrifying books I've read in a very long time! Right up there with George R.R. Martin, if not more so. Remember what we learned from Jaws: you don't actually need to SEE the shark in order for it to be terrifying. Sometimes not seeing the shark is even worse.
The story is basically about a teenager who is forced to compete in a 24-man-enter-1-man-leaves event. I don't want to spoil it by saying any more, but if you liked The Running Man, you'll definitely like this. And if you're young enough that you don't remember The Running Man, nor did you get the Thunderdome reference, then I'm just way too old. But take an old fogey's advice and read this book.
Amazon, when can I preorder book 2???The Hunger Games Overview

The Chronicles of Soone - Warrior Rising ReviewWarrior Rising was chock full of action! I couldn't find anywhere that this novel bogged down at all. Read it in almost one sitting, but had to get to bed. There are some similarities to STar Wars in style, but the story is totally different. Highly recommended for all ages if you love star wars, Trek and fantasy...I'm looking forward to the sequel that's supposed to be coming soon! The Chronicles of Soone - Warrior Rising OverviewSPIRITUAL DARKNESS: A devastating interplanetary war has been raging for decades. The fallen ones have instigated mankind's downfall, waging a sinister campaign leading towards a singular goal, universal domination. A WARRIOR RACE: Long the ordained guardians of peace, the Barudii, have been reduced to a scattered remnant struggling to survive. All but wiped out by the Vorn clan, they have little hope of stopping the genocide that threatens mankind's survival. THE LAST HEIR: Tiet soone--betrayed by the brother he never knew he had--is now the only remaining heir to the Barudii throne, returning from exile to avenge his fallen people. He is the final hope for restoration, and the only one that can mediate a peace between the warring clans before its too late...before the dark forces opposing his every effort succeed in enslaving humanity. To claim victory he will do what Barudii warriors do best...fight-to the death if need be. “James Somers is one of my favorite authors. His pacing, creativity and the unique spiritual perspective he brings to his stories never disappoints." - Jeremy Robinson, author of PULSE and INSTINCT. PRAISE FOR: THE REALM SHIFT TRILOGY"The Realm Shift's intrigue is second only to its action!" -- Wayne Thomas Batson, author, The Berinfell Prophecies and The Door Within Trilogy."The Realm Shift doesn't just draw you in, it sucks you in! The story is full of mystery, adventure, danger and inspiration. I highly recommend it!" -- Brian Tubbs, Pastor, Sligo Baptist Church."The Realm Shift is written in a grand mythic type of storytelling reminiscent of Tolkien's Lord of the Ring Trilogy. It grabs the reader from the get-go and takes you on an intense ride through its thrilling, unstoppable trajectory!" -- Rai Aren, author, The Secret Sands."The Realm Shift is spiritual warfare as you've never read it before. An awesome book!" -- Betty Dravis, author, Toonies Invade Silicon Valley and 1106 Grand Boulevard.PRAISE FOR: THE CHRONICLES OF SOONE"...an intense, action packed sci-fi story with a heart. A gripping story, not to be missed!"-Jeremy Robinson, Bestselling Author of: PULSE, INSTINCT & BENEATH“Sparks of Creative Genius: Somers' strength is plotting. No bog down scenes here. It just keeps amping. Wait until you meet the cyborg assasin Vale. He alone adds a rogue suspense mechanism worth the price of admission. The Vorn, the Barudii, the transdimensional rift--all very cool elements. A Story Worth Hearing!"-Wayne Thomas Batson, Bestselling Author of: The Door Within Trilogy, Isle of Fire & The Berinfell Prophecies“Everything an action sci-fi fan could ask for: Full of battle. From the opening scene I was captivated. Woven into the action are moral dilemmas and tragedy, coupled with a unique perspective on the battle between good and evil. An excellent read."-Craig Alexander, Author of: The Nineveh Project & The Assassin
