Lost at the Con ReviewI don't write many reviews, mostly because I'm incredibly lazy but DAMN I enjoyed this book! The least I can do is let the rest of you know how much fun it is to read.
Take a middle-aged, scotch-soaked sell-out political journalist, throw him into the middle of a chaotic comic-con where his cynicism and contempt are given free-reign and what do you get? You get a story of redemption that's full of clever quips and lightning-fast wit and a story that moves so quickly you won't believe it's over.
The pop-culture references are so thick that a single reading isn't enough. This book isn't for the dim, so if your idea of humor is a football to the nuts, you might want to pass on this one. The humor is eclectic and clever and the author doesn't stop to explain the joke, he just lays it on you and moves on. There were sections I read and just shook my head in amazement and others where I laughed so hard I woke the baby (sorry honey).

I love how Allyn tells you how to help in all the stages of the writing process. It helps parents realize not only how important writing is for a child but how to help encourage them and help them. I loved the chapter with writing prompts! They are perfect for my kids homeschooling career! It is a huge help to have whether you homeschool or just want to help your child after school and in the summer. Allyn encourages you to also have a cozy and comfortable environment for your child so he or she can sit and write whenever they want about whatever they want. Since my 8 year old does not enjoy writing at all at this point in his schooling, I found this tips in this book amazingly helpful. She answered questions for me like "why is writing important for my child at this age or that age" and also when and why a parents involvement in important. I never know when to jump in and help and when to just let my son work through it. Also, her emphasis of the "five keys in order to be a forever writer" were extremely helpful and I loved the idea of a "word jar". I actually can't wait until Sept. to start using all the hints on an every day basis for school.Allyn's advice on not to put too much emphasis on the writing mechanics and spelling, especially in younger children, was especially helpful to me. My daughter is 6 and is a very advanced reader but only one grade ahead in spelling and grammar. When she writes I constantly want to correct her spelling and grammar. Bad spelling is a huge pet peeve of mine so I have learned to back off a little. Like I said, whether you are a homeschooling parent, a teacher in a public or private school or just a parent that wants to be involved in your child's writing career, this book is an amazing book! The Sacred Promise: How Science Is Discovering Spirit's Collaboration with Us in Our Daily Lives ReviewI think Dr. Schwartz deserves much credit for using the scientific method and designing well-thought-out experiments to test hypotheses that are both fascinating and clearly not mainstream. But the theories he is testing are also jaw-dropping: Is there a true spirit world? And is Spirit not only aware of us but actively intervening in our lives or at least trying to work collaboratively with us? Cynics may call this New Age hogwash. But those with an open mind may well appreciate what Dr. Schwartz's findings reveal.
Dr. Schwartz approaches his work with healthy skepticism. Beliefs are one thing, evidence is quite another. Research findings can either support or fail to support a given hypothesis (researchers don't really talk about "proving" an hypothesis). And in any research results, there are usually alternate hypotheses that could possibly have accounted for the findings and which must be systematically ruled-out in future research in order to firm up the validity of the theory being tested. And Dr. Schwartz manages to do this in his ongoing series of experiments that began in the 1990's and were documented in his first book "The After Life Experiments." Initially he tested mediums to determine if evidence supports the idea that mediums are able to provide personal information to an unknown individual that lends support to the idea that a deceased loved one was perhaps providing that information. His results were extremely compelling. In "The Sacred Promise" he takes it a bold step further and offers evidence that supports the notion that not only do loved ones exist in some form of consciousness and aliveness, but that they interact with us and indeed try to collaborate with us. Disbelievers may cry out "Bunk!" but anyone with a willingness to have an open mind and who appreciates the beauty and integrity of the scientific method must at least look at Dr. Schwartz's findings and be intrigued. (Hard-core believers can be just as non-scientific as cynics when it comes to trying to be objective as possible about evidence. Reflexively believing in all findings is just as problematic as believing in none of them.)
He even discusses beliefs about angels or beings of light and goes on to show experiments where highly expensive cameras that can detect the tiniest evidence of light are placed in an all-dark room and at various times when angels are "asked" to visit the room the cameras detected more light. Skeptics can rightly raise an eyebrow at what actually happened there or why it happened--but the fact is SOMETHING happened. An honest investigator would want to explore those results further.
There is much more to this book in the form of content that other reviewers may decide to mention. I felt it was important however to let a reader know that in my view Dr. Schwartz's methodology and desire for scientific rigor appear sound and proper. And yes, while I am someone who does believe in an after-life and has a personal interest in the kind of theories Dr. Schwartz is testing due to some of my own life experiences (and I do not know and have never met or spoken with Dr. Schwartz) I was trained in the scientific method and have a healthy respect for it. I admire what Dr. Schwartz is doing--it does take courage to put forth this line of research when he has to put up with some hostile detractors (who simply do not believe such findings are possible so choose to condemn the researcher rather than look honestly at the data).

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to become more tolerant of those with a liberal point of view. It seems to me that so many books are one-sided and extreme. Harry Potter, Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings: What You Need to Know About Fantasy Books and Movies ReviewHarry Potter, Narnia, and the Lord of the Rings by Richard Abanes is a dissection of three of the greatest fantasy phenomena around today. Is fantasy harmful? Can we learn from it? Are there different types? How does fantasy affect us?
These are just a few of the questions Abanes answers in his informative book. As a mildly interested reader and watcher of fantasy, this book surprised me as it disclosed the impact that reading or observing fantasy can have on a person--especially a child or teenager. Yet parents are often very lax in supervising what their children read or watch, resulting in a decline in morals as well as an increasing interest in the occult.
Abanes compares the three above-named fantasies to show what each is preaching or teaching. With the Narnia and Lord of the Rings series, he shows how Christian values and morals can be taught through the fantasy medium.
With Harry Potter, he raises a few questions. Some in the Christian arena have said it teaches Christian morals. Abanes disputes this by asking: Do we have a clear-cut example of good and bad in Harry Potter? How can we call the hero "good" and yet watch Harry lie, cheat, and steal? What about all the occult spells and paraphernalia explored in the books?
In the last chapters, he shows how television and movies are delving more and more into the occult, including horror movies and even prime-time weekly television programs. "Children are big imitators," asserts Abanes. Many of the crimes being perpetrated today--especially by children and teenagers--are copycats of scenes watched in movies or television.
Harry Potter, Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings is enlightening while remaining highly readable. Papercutz Slices #1: Harry Potty and the Deathly Boring ReviewAs a 26-year-old woman, it's been difficult for me to become too invested in any of the graphic novels being released by Papercutz--and rightfully so. The nearly six-year-old company is a graphic novel publisher for tweens and teens, and though Harry Potter has supposedly crossed all age groups, I never became a fan. So needless to say, Papercutz's Harry Potty and the Deathly Boring, a parody of the ultrapopular book series/move franchise, wasn't necessarily my cup of tea, but even I could appreciate some of the subtle social commentary and tongue-in-cheek references that your average kid wouldn't have picked up. Also, just to be fair, it should be pointed out that my two young nieces, ages six and seven, thought Harry Potty was hilarious.
Apparently, this is just one of what will become a long line of parodies produced by Papercutz's Slices, a parody imprint "dedicated to cutting up your favorite pop culture icons." All of the familiar characters are here, though renamed in snarky fashion. There's Harry Potty (Harry Potter), of course, and Don Measley (Ron Weasley), Whiny Stranger (Hermione Granger), Dumb-as-a-Door (Dumbledore), and Frappe (Severus Snape), etc. The Deathly Boring is writer Stefan Petrucha's take on the tale of how Potty found his way to "Nosewarts," becoming one of the school's most beloved students, while also becoming embroiled in a battle after the killing of his mentor Dumb-as-a-door by the "traitorous barista" Frappe.

The title of Papercutz's parody would seem to imply that the entirety of the story will be based on Rowling's final tome, but that's actually incorrect. Harry Potty and the Deathly Boring provides a look back at each of Rowling's books, but of course all of them have been cleverly renamed (Omelette of Fire and The Border of Phoenix, among others). The retelling is cleverly done by Petrucha. Rather than break the book into sections for each of Rowling's books, it's presented as a flashback by Whiny Stranger, who uses the spell "rememberallthisstufficis" to recap all seven books in rapid succession.

My favorite feature of The Deathly Boring was the fact that all of Harry's rivals' names were based on big business, such as the incredibly creepy villain Value-Mart (Wal-Mart) (also known as He Whose Prices Can't Be Beat), Horbucks (Starbucks), and Odor Eaters, all of whom he defeats with his motley crew of crazy friends in this bizarre take on the much beloved series. Admittedly, many of the jokes are hit or miss and geared toward the younger set, but there's no denying that it's a take on Harry Potter that you won't read anywhere else. Plus, only in a Papercutz parody would Potty avenge the death of his parents and mentors with (prepare yourself) a toilet plunger.
