Fodor's Walt Disney World 2011: With Universal, SeaWorld, and the Best of Central Florida (Full-color Travel Guide) ReviewI found this WDW reference book to be a completely acceptable tool.....especially for repeat Disney visitors with older children--teens or "tweeners." The book addresses each of the Disney parks in adequate detail...in addition to Universal Studios, Sea World, and waterparks unrelated to Disney. The color photos that the book contains were beautifully done and certainly appreciated. And while this book will certainly serve as my guide and research tool for what I hope will be a visit to the Disney area in the spring, for a first-time visitor (especially one with young children), I would highly recommend The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World (2011 version of course). When I first visited Disney with my young children, this book served as a "bible" of sorts. The Unofficial Guide details each and every ride in each and every Disney park (rather than just the highlights, as is the case in Fodor's reference book), and evaluates it based age-range appeal, scare factor, and more. I carried this book with me the entire week and did not make a move without consulting it first.
Again, completely adequate tool to repeat WDW visitors, but somewhat lacking for those neophyte visitors who require as much information as possible.-DYBFodor's Walt Disney World 2011: With Universal, SeaWorld, and the Best of Central Florida (Full-color Travel Guide) Overview

Caribbean Pirates: A Treasure Chest of Fact, Fiction, and Folklore ReviewAs he did with his books on Harry Potter and Stephen King, George Beahm has done it again with CARIBBEAN PIRATES: He has taken the historically rich subject of pirates and presented just about everything you could possibly want to know about them in a readable, accessible format. The book bills itself as a treasure chest of fact and lore and that is, in fact, the term that immediately comes to mind when you pick the book up. It is gorgeously designed with a great array of photos; it has beautiful French flaps that open to a full-size map on the end papers. Inside, the design is equally lush and appealing. The photos, many of which were taken by the author, span the gamut of pirate history, legend, and popular culture.
But what makes a book worthy of a reader's time and money is not its design, but its content. What's inside. And in this, Beahm also delivers spectacularly. The first section, "Pirate Fact and Fiction," is essentially a "Pirates FAQ." A question is asked; an answer is provided. And the questions are irresistible: "Did pirates consult voodoo priestesses?" "Did pirates use marooning as a punishment?" "Did pirates make their victims walk the plank?" And dozens more, all of which are answered clearly, and are great fun to read. (And I won't spoil said fun by providing the answers!)
The second part of the book is called "A Pirate's Life for You" and is basically a "how-to" on how to speak, dress, and live like a pirate. This, too is great fun. There's also a pirates quiz, and sections on pirate books, movies, websites, and memorabilia. There's also a glossary of pirate terms, including a section on "Insulting Terms." You'll learn that calling someone a "bilge rat" is a great way to start a fight, if you're so inclined.
The Disney PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films have spurred interest in all things pirate, and George Beahm's CARIBBEAN PIRATES is the perfect companion to the whole pirate experience. It's concise, clearly written, historically accurate, and, above all, a delight to read. Recommended.Caribbean Pirates: A Treasure Chest of Fact, Fiction, and Folklore OverviewIs a pirate's life for you? Here's how to live the life of a Caribbean pirate!Think you know everything there is to know about pirates, do you? Well me bucko, you've got a lot to learn, and here's where you can drink your fill!Recommended by Pat Croce (of Pirate Soul) and two leading pirate magazines (No Quarter Given and Pyrates Way), Caribbean Pirates is an engaging look at pirate history through the lens of the Disney film franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean -- explaining fact from Hollywood fiction. With art especially commissioned by former Disney Imagineer Tim Kirk and 145 color photos, this book not only features over four dozen essays about pirate life ("Were pirates really hung?" and "Were there cannibals in the Caribbean?") but also a wealth of information on how to talk, dress, and live like a pirate: drink your fill at festivals, cruises, and museums with pirate exhibits. The book concludes with recommended resources (books, movies, and websites). A "no holds barred" look at the colorful cutthroats that cruised and plundered the Caribbean!

Fodor's Walt Disney World with Kids 2011: with Universal Orlando, SeaWorld & Aquatica (Travel Guide) ReviewMy husband, 13 and 5 year old daughters, and I are Disney veterans. We would rather take a Disney vacation, than almost anything else. We love Disney World, we love Disney Cruises, and we have enjoyed Disneyland a number of times. Needless to say, we own a number of Disney travel guides. I have to say, though, FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is one of the best that I have seen.
To begin with, FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is both well organized and easy to read. A lot of guides have special little hints and tips embedded in their pages, as does FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011. The difference is that with most other guides, the font on the tips and tricks is smaller, cramped, and hard to read. They also make the pages look busy, confused, and jumbled. However, in FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011, these helpful hints are in the same size font as the rest of the text. They flow naturally as you read and are indicated with bold lettering or color. This makes looking things up extremely fast and easy.
The chapters in FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 are also well done and nicely organized. There is a chapter on hotels, one on each main park, one on each minor park (the water parks, Downtown Disney, etc.), one on dining, and several on NON-Disney attractions like the new Harry Potter park. Each chapter has maps and phone numbers, as well as excellent planning aids. Even with all the times we've visited Disney World, I found places and adventures that were either new or we had missed. This really helped us plan our next trip, when we plan to focus on things we've never seen. Additionally, each chapter provides hints on finding Hidden Mickeys, which is one of my family's favorite pastimes. And one of the best features of FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is that each section includes a list of suitable attractions by age and scare factor. With such a wide age span between my kids, I find these pages to be exceedingly helpful.
As I said before, FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is one of the best guides for Walt Disney World that I have seen. It can replace about 5 other guides that we use. And traveling lightly is always a plus. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all Disney lovers.
Fodor's Walt Disney World with Kids 2011: with Universal Orlando, SeaWorld & Aquatica (Travel Guide) OverviewInside this new edition is all the information you need to have the family vacation of a lifetime at the Orlando theme parks. Up-to-date and written with the help of more than 500 families, this guide is packed with details on all the attractions at Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld. It's user-friendly, fun, and designed for at-a-glance reference. And it will help you and your family plan the vacation each of you wants.

Four Decades of Magic: Celebrating the First Forty Years of Disney World ReviewI'm definitely more of a Disneyland admirer than its east coast counterpart, Walt Disney World. Still, I loved reading this volume with its fantastic collection of behind-the-scenes stories of WDW. Compiled from a number of different authors, some of the chapters are more compelling than others, but all are enjoyable.
As a young child, I attended The Hoop Dee Doo Review dinner show, had a very memorable dinner aboard the Empress Lilly, and spent a week at The Polynesian Resort. Reading the background on both of these WDW "attractions" brought back many memories. Because of this, "The History of the Hoop Dee Doo Revue" by Chuck Mirachi , "Another Magic Corner of The World" by Foxx Nolte, and "The History of the Contemporary and Polynesian Resort Hotels" (also by Mirachi) were some of my favorites. Michael Scopa's chapter on "The Carousel of Progress" has an extremely moving story about one of the animatronics in the show. Mike Lee's chapter on Thunder Mesa and Western River Expedition was a little sad; to learn of what a creative and amazing attraction Marc Davis put together makes the reader yearn for it to have been built. Still, there are many other tales in this book of other similar concepts (both large and small) that never made it off the drawing board.
My only beef with "Four Decades of Magic" is the actual quality/presentation of the book. It is littered with typos, which is a shame as it immediately makes me question the veracity of what is being said here. Knowing some of the authors personally, I know that the question of their integrity really isn't a problem, as most are experts in their field. This is why it's a shame that a good proofreader doesn't seem to have been involved anywhere in the publishing process. For such an exciting topic as WDW, it's also a shame that there was so little (if any) creativity in the layout and design. Those looking for a profusely illustrated volume will not be satisfied here; only the last few chapters have any photos, and the reproduction quality of those go from bad to worse.
In a volume of this size, I'd say that Chad Emerson did a wonderful job of editing a topic (WDW) that could have yielded an unwieldy book almost as big as the resort itself! Definitely a must-read for WDW fans who are content with only the written word.Four Decades of Magic: Celebrating the First Forty Years of Disney World OverviewOver the last four decades, the Walt Disney World Resort has created magical memories for millions of guests. From its early days as a single theme park with a handful of resorts and amenities to its current roster of multiple theme parks, water parks, resorts, and other vacation destinations, Disney World has, in many ways, defined the Great American vacation. In honor ofthe resort's 40th anniversary in October 2011, 'Four Decades of Magic" brings together the most diverse and complete group of Disney experts yet to share their memories, stories, and experiences with the world's most magical place. Whether you've been to Disney World many times or just a few, this special compilation will introduce you to unique, true life tales that have caused this magical destination to hold such a special place in the hearts of so many.

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World with Kids 2012 (Unofficial Guides) ReviewI bought a regular TUG 2009 at a discount store to start learning info about our trip in Jan 2012. So much has changed since we went in 2000! I decided to get an updated version because of all the changes (or so I've heard, this is our first family trip.) This book is essential in any form. LOTS of good info for parents, especially if you have preschoolers. It is a smaller book compared to the TUG WDW, but more focused on kids. It condenses some of the WDW hotel info and does not include as many of the reader comments. Fully describes the attractions and shows to help you decide what the kids will like. Great book! The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World with Kids 2012 (Unofficial Guides) Overview

The Unofficial Guide Walt Disney World 2011 (Unofficial Guides) ReviewMy family and I are planning to go to Walt Disney World in a couple of months, so I ordered the 2011 Version of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World (WDW). I first went to WDW in the late 90's, and as I wanted to make sure I enjoyed everything there was to enjoy, I bought three or four books on WDW and the surrounding area. I found that the Unofficial Guide had pretty much everything the other books had, and more, so for my next trip in 2004, I only bought the Unofficial Guide.
After receiving the 2011 version and heavily perusing it, I find that, if anything, it's even better than the previous versions. If nothing else, its a LOT larger than the first one I bought in the 90's. It gives ratings and reviews of hotels and dining establishments in the area (both on and off Disney World), covers all of the parks and attractions on Disney in tremendous detail, and the parks and attractions off of Disney in lesser detail (primarily Universal Studios and Seaworld). Additionally, the book provides information on how Disney prices their tickets, how to save money on meals, when to visit Disney, and of course, at the end of the book, their recommended touring plans for each park in order to see as much of the parks as possible in the least amount of time.
The touring plans themselves are almost worth the price of the books. If you've never been to WDW, the parks are HUGE ... and if you just start wandering around and getting on whichever attraction catches your eye, you're going to be spending a lot more time in lines (and less time enjoying the attractions) than you should. Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with just going where you want to, when you want to, but you could spend literally hours more waiting in lines than you need to. The guide has several plans for each park ... bascially with and without children, along with a few variations for some parks. As this is my first trip to Disney with small children, I was particularly interested to get these touring plans.
There is also an affiliated Unofficial Guide to WDW website that you have to pay a suscription to get to some of the site's exclusive content for a year. If you've bought the book, you get about one-third off of the price of the subscription (when claiming discount, you have to identify the correct word from a page of the guide). While the web site does have some interesting things and the very latest information, all that you need when visiting WDW is in the book, so don't feel as if you're being cheated if you don't choose to subscribe to the web site.
Disney changes a lot every year. Given that it's been six years since I last visited, I'm glad I bought the book, to read about new things to do. I also learned some things that I wouldn't have discovered without the guide. For example, you can rent a pontoon boat and captain and watch the fireworks at Magic Kingdom and Illuminations at Epcot from the lakes, rather than being packed on the sidewalks. You will also be dropped off at a water-adjoining resort of your choice afterwards so you can beat the rush out of the park. It's not cheap, but I made a reservation and am looking forward to enjoying the fireworks without 10,000 of my closest friends close at hand. :-)
Overall, I give this book 5 stars. If you're looking to visit additional places in the Orlando area other than Disney (and perhaps Sea World and Universal Studios), you may want to buy a second book, but I'd wait to buy it until after I read this guide, as it may have all that you need. The Unofficial Guide Walt Disney World 2011 (Unofficial Guides) OverviewUnofficial Guides field tested touring plans can save as much as four hours of standing in line in a single day.
In 2008, combined Walt Disney World Resort theme park attendance reached over 51 million, with the Magic Kingdom alone drawing over 17 million visitors. (Orlando Convention and Visitor Bureau)
Despite signifcant downturns in the economy Disney theme parks have maintained attendance rates and made gains in attendance at some parks.
Walt Disney World Resort theme parks are rated best in the world. earning high marks for things outside of the traditional theme park experience. Epcot's International Food & Wine Festival, which takes place for six weeks every fall and showcases food from twenty-five countries, was rated by Forbes Traveler as one of the Best U.S. Food and Wine Festivals.

Harry Potter, Instrumental Solos for Violin/Piano Accompaniment (Movies 1-5) (Pop Instrumental Solo) ReviewI was a little disappointed by this book. The music pieces are great, but I ordered this book because I play cello and it's for string instruments.
