Whiskey and Tonic (The Whiskey Mattimoe Mysteries) ReviewWhiskey and Abra are back for another funny mystery. Once again, the antics of Abra and her canine associates steal the book.
In a surprising yet welcomed turn, Whiskey does move on with her life after the death of her beloved Leo by deepening her relationship with the local judge. Abra, on the hand, continues to treat everyone but male dogs with disrespect and aloofness. Her reputation for being a thief has grown. Prince Harry also refused to be potty trained--peeing on everything in sight except fire hydrants and trees.
I love this series. It is one of the top five book series I've had the pleasure of reading and rereading. However, start with the first book, Whiskey on the Rocks and then the second, Whiskey Straight Up. You'll understand Abra better, who, of course, is the star of the books.Whiskey and Tonic (The Whiskey Mattimoe Mysteries) Overview

Dead Dogs and Englishmen (An Emily Kincaid Mystery) ReviewNot many writers are brave enough to start a novel with a description of tentworms. I mean, really: "Each of the sticky, white webs woven into the blackened and sickly trees writhed with thousands of worms...in June, the worms tore open their throbbing webs and marched up the newly leafed oaks and maples, chewing as they climbed, stripping every tree...."
It's like my life, the narrator tells us. Upside down, and backwards. Indeed "Dead Dogs and Englishmen" is the story of emergence--of the Emily Kincaid, fledgling writer and independent woman, and of her friends--Deputy Dolly, old Henry Mockerman, and Emily's companion dog Sorrow.
But there's more: when the lush Northern Michigan landscape is stripped bare of its leaves and the woods turns dry and the earth cracks open, Emily finds a twisted evil, almost beyond imagination. It comes first in the form of dead dogs, then missing people, and -- ultimately -- human corpses.
I don't want to give away the story by answering the questions (Who's the murder? Who's the father? Where's the missing family? Why all the intrigue in sleepy, agricultural northern Michigan?) I'll just say that this is one heck of a good book, excellently crafted and interspersed with humor and fun. And it's a wonderful depiction of Northern Michigan: trust me--I live there.Dead Dogs and Englishmen (An Emily Kincaid Mystery) Overview
"Buzzelli will have you packing your bags for a move to northern Michigan."—KIRKUS REVIEWS (starred review)

Something nasty is afoot in Emily Kincaid's northern Michigan town—besides Emily's increasingly cranky friend Deputy Dolly. When the body of a brutally slain woman turns up in an abandoned farmhouse, Emily and Dolly uncover a disturbing pattern. Bodies of dead dogs are being thrown into migrant Mexican workers' yards—a gruesome warning to keep someone's despicable secret.

Clues to unravel this macabre affair seem woven into the manuscript Emily is editing for Cecil Hawke, an eccentric English author. Each page paints an eerily familiar picture of intimidation, madness, and murder. But reading further into the Englishman's twisted fiction could spell Emily's untimely death.

Ink Flamingos: A Tattoo Shop Mystery Reviewne of Brett's customers at The Painted Lady, a high class tattoo shop, has been found dead in a Las Vegas hotel room. She is found surrounded by several tattoo supplies including needles and ink pots. A woman matching Brett's description was witnessed leaving the crime scene.
As Brett is been profiled as the prime suspect a blog is found on the internet showcasing the dead clients tattoo. Then pictures of Brett start showing up on the blog and it even looks like the blogger is Brett herself.
Brett is frantic to find out who is behind this blog because she knows it will lead her to the real killer. The sooner she does that she can get back to her own life and see where the ink may lead her.I loved this book so much. Karen is a wonderful writer and all these stories were pure pleasure to read. They almost have me convinced to get a tattoo, but no flamingos please.
The characters have depth and continue to grow, new sides are shown, romance is budding, each character is so overwhelmingly different but fit together so easily. The scenes are set in your mind clearly through the author's words, I have never been to Vegas but would love to go there now. The plots are well thought through and credible. The stories are some of the best I have read.
It is a fast paced mystery that will keep you up all night inking together the clues to solve the mystery, but in just four stories readers are emotionally connected to the characters that you are rooting for all of them, even some that may have lost their way. I for one am very sad that this is the last we will hear from Brett, Joel, Bitsy, Ace, Tim, Sylvia and Jeff. This is one reader who is having a hard time saying good-bye.Disclosure Connection: I received this book free from Obsidian, a division of Penguin Publishing. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. When Dee is discovered dead surrounded by ink pots and needles, Brett is branded a suspect. It seems that someone is impersonating Brett. And if she doesn't act fast, the killer is sure to put the dye in dying once again...
