Blood, Guns, and Testosterone: Action Films, Audiences, and a Thirst for Violence ReviewBlood, Guns and Testosterone is the perfect title for this book by Barna William Donovan, a professor and host of an online radio show called Culture Wars. He often discusses violent entertainment and this book on his show. As a student with an interest in film and cultural studies, I'm glad I got around to reading this at last and commenting on it.
Donovan, basing his book on a series of his own studies, writes about the films as well as the fans. If you are interested in a look at action films like the old Rambo, Dirty Harry, and Die Hard movies, along with the current superhero and video game movies, this book treats all the films as important cultural products whose popularity needs to be understood. The book gives a great history of the action genre and outlines all the classic formulas and plot and character structures. This, of course, might turn off some readers from the camp that thinks only Shakespeare and Dickens should be studied as art. That's fine, though, since many of the people who feel that way usually don't even study Shakespeare OR Dickens. For some, studying art and culture is too "elitist."
But this book is also fascinating to read for the way it looks at the audience. Like Donovan writes in the introduction, the audiences are always ignored by anti-media and anti-violence zealots like the Parents TV Council who rarely read and never understand any of the research on audience behavior.
Blood, Guns and Testosterone, all in all, is a great study of movies and why people love their messages...even if those messages are violent.Blood, Guns, and Testosterone: Action Films, Audiences, and a Thirst for Violence Overview
